Shinpi Trail Section 3: Starting from Hirayu, crossing Mt. Yakedake and Nakao Pass

Starting and ending at Hirayu Onsen in the historic hot spring resort of Oku-Hida Onsenkyo, this course includes Nakao Highlands, a highlight of the Shinpi Trail, and a peak hunt to Mount Yakedake, a still-active volcano. Travel by bus from Hirayu Bus Terminal to Nakao Onsen, the trailhead for Mount Yakedake on the Oku-Hida side. As you cross Nakao Pass and approach Mount Yakedake's summit, you'll be able to see the rugged rock faces characteristic of volcanoes. The view of the Hotaka mountain range from Mount Yakedake's summit is breathtaking. After reaching the summit, head to Kamikochi, one of Japan's most scenic mountain views. Return by bus from Kamikochi to Hirayu. Before or after the hike, we recommend relaxing in Hirayu Onsen or Nakao Onsen, soothing both body and mind and feeling the blessings of the volcano.

  The route departs and arrives at Hirayu Bus Terminal, making it easily accessible from both the Takayama and Matsumoto sides.

  This is a luxurious course that takes you around two hot spring resorts, Hirayu Onsen and Nakao Onsen, Mt. Yakedake, which is popular among climbers due to its elevation of nearly 2500m, and Kamikochi, one of Japan's most scenic mountain destinations, all in one day.

  This course includes a peak hunt to Mt. Yakedake, an active volcano, and the view of the rugged rock surface typical of volcanoes and the towering Hotaka mountain range is definitely worth seeing.

  This course descends to Kamikochi, the birthplace of modern mountaineering. From Kappa Bridge, you can view the clear waters of the Azusa River with the stunning scenery of the Hotaka mountain range in the background.

  Before or after your hike, relax your body and mind at Hirayu Onsen and Nakao Onsen in the historic Okuhida Onsen area. Enjoy the hot springs, a blessing from the volcano.
